This is why we get cramps at night

Why Do We Get Cramps at Night? 🌙🦵

Nighttime leg cramps are very common and usually harmless. They happen when a muscle—most often the calf—suddenly contracts and won’t relax for a short time. In many cases, there isn’t one identifiable cause.

Common factors that can contribute

  • Muscle fatigue or overuse
  • Dehydration
  • Sitting or standing in one position for long periods
  • Reduced physical activity
  • Aging
  • Certain medications, including some diuretics, blood-pressure medicines and statins
  • Less commonly, problems involving nerves, blood flow, the kidneys, thyroid or diabetes

It’s often claimed that nighttime cramps simply mean you’re deficient in magnesium, potassium or calcium. That’s not always true—most nighttime cramps have no single proven cause, so taking supplements isn’t automatically the answer.

🦶 What to do when a cramp strikes

  1. Straighten the leg.
  2. Pull the toes and foot gently toward your face to stretch the calf.
  3. Massage the cramped muscle.
  4. Stand and put weight on the affected leg if you’re able.
  5. Heat from a warm shower or bath may also help
