What eating cucumbers every day can actually do
Cucumbers can be a healthy addition to your diet, but claims that they “detox” the body or cure disease are exaggerated.
Hydration: Cucumbers contain a lot of water, so they contribute to daily fluid intake.
Low in calories: They’re useful for adding volume and crunch without many calories.
Some fiber: Eating the skin provides more fiber, which supports normal bowel function.
Vitamin K: Cucumbers provide vitamin K, which is important for normal blood clotting and bone health.
Antioxidants: They contain compounds such as flavonoids and other antioxidants.
Potassium: They provide some potassium, which contributes to normal muscle and nerve function and healthy blood pressure.
May support heart health: Replacing salty, highly processed snacks with vegetables such as cucumber can contribute to an overall heart-healthy eating pattern.
One caution
If you have advanced kidney disease or have been told to restrict potassium or fluids, don’t assume that eating large amounts of cucumber is automatically appropriate. Your dietary requirements may be different.
And cucumber isn’t a treatment for kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or other medical conditions—it works best as part of an overall nutritious diet.
