Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

๐ŸŒ The kitchen-item trick that can help bananas last longer

The โ€œone kitchen itemโ€ is plastic wrap. Wrap the banana stems/crown, rather than the entire fruit. This can slow the release and movement of ethylene, the natural gas involved in ripening.

How to do it
Wrap the exposed stems tightly with plastic wrap.
Keep the bananas at room temperature while they’re still ripening.
Keep them away from direct sunlight and other ethylene-producing fruits such as apples and avocados.
Once they’re ripe, refrigerate them to slow further ripening. The peel may turn brown, but the flesh can remain good for several more days.

Will they really last 10 days longer?

Don’t count on an extra 10 days. Stem wrapping can buy you a few additional days, but the exact benefit depends on the bananas’ ripeness and storage conditions. Independent testing has found the effect can be modest.

Best simple combination: wrap the stems โ†’ keep bananas cool and away from other fruit โ†’ refrigerate once ripe.
