Visible Signs That May Be Linked to Liver Disease
Some changes in the skin, eyes, nails, and body can occur when liver disease becomes significant. But none of these signs alone proves that someone has liver disease, and early liver disease often causes no symptoms at all.

Watch for:
Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice): Caused by a buildup of bilirubin and can be a sign of liver or bile-duct problems.

Spider-like blood vessels on the skin: Small clusters of visible blood vessels, sometimes called spider angiomas, can occur with cirrhosis.

Red or blotchy palms: Palmar redness can occur with cirrhosis.

Swollen ankles, legs, or feet: Fluid retention can occur as advanced liver disease develops.

A swollen abdomen: Fluid accumulation, called ascites, can cause the abdomen to enlarge.

Easy bruising or bleeding: Advanced liver disease can interfere with normal blood clotting.

Changes in nails: White nails or other nail changes can sometimes occur with cirrhosis.

Persistent itching: Itching can occur with several liver diseases, including diseases affecting bile flow.

Dark urine or unusually pale stools: These can accompany problems with bilirubin and bile flow.

Don’t rely on appearance alone
Many people with liver disease look completely healthy, particularly in the early stages. Doctors may use liver blood tests, imaging, and sometimes other tests to determine whether liver damage is present.

New yellowing of the eyes or skin, significant abdominal swelling, vomiting blood, black/bloody stools, or new confusion warrants prompt medical attention. These can indicate serious liver complications.
