Unfortunately, there is no natural method that guarantees weeds will disappear forever. Weed seeds can remain in the soil and arrive from neighboring areas. But you can greatly reduce the problem by combining removal with prevention.

1. Pull them while they’re young
Pull weeds after rain or watering, when the soil is moist. For perennial weeds, try to remove as much of the root system and underground stems as possible. Don’t let weeds flower and produce seeds.

2. Cover the soil with mulch
After removing existing weeds, apply about 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) of organic mulch, such as wood chips, shredded bark, leaves, or weed-free straw. Mulch blocks light and makes it much harder for new weed seeds to germinate.

3. Try cardboard “sheet mulching”
For a heavily weeded area, lay overlapping pieces of plain cardboard over the soil, wet them, and cover them with several inches of mulch. This can provide longer-lasting suppression than mulch alone.

4. Use boiling water carefully
For weeds growing in driveway or sidewalk cracks, boiling water can kill them without herbicides. However, it will also kill desirable plants it touches, and deep-rooted weeds may require repeat treatments.

What about vinegar and salt?
Be careful with viral recipes containing vinegar + salt + dish soap. Vinegar mainly burns the foliage and often doesn’t kill established perennial roots. Salt can also create problems for the soil and nearby plants. Even concentrated “horticultural vinegar” can cause serious skin and eye injuries.
