If you crack an egg and see a white, rope-like or ribbon-like strand attached to the yolk, it’s most likely the chalaza.
The chalaza is a normal part of the egg. It’s made of twisted protein strands that help keep the yolk centered inside the egg. In fact:
- It’s completely safe to eat.
- It’s often more noticeable in fresher eggs.
- It is not an embryo, parasite, or sign that the egg is spoiled.
You can leave it in when cooking, or remove it if its texture bothers you.
Without seeing the actual egg, I can’t be certain, but the chalaza is by far the most common explanation for descriptions like “a white ribbon-like thing attached to the egg.” If you have a photo, I can take a closer look and help identify it.
