My nana taught me this hack to defrost icy freezers in 5 mins with 0 work. Here’s how it works

The “5-minute freezer defrost hack” you often see online usually involves using steam or hot water to loosen ice quickly. It can work, but there are a few safety points to keep in mind.

Quick freezer defrost method (safer version)

What you need:

  • A bowl or pan of hot water (not boiling)
  • Towels
  • A spatula or plastic scraper (optional)

Steps:

  1. Unplug the freezer and remove food. Keep food in a cooler if possible.
  2. Place a bowl of hot water inside the freezer and close the door.
  3. Put towels underneath to catch melting ice.
  4. Wait 5–15 minutes and check the ice. Replace the warm water if needed.
  5. Gently remove loosened ice with a plastic scraper.

Avoid these “hacks”

Do not pour boiling water directly onto freezer walls — sudden temperature changes can damage plastic parts.
Do not use knives, screwdrivers, or sharp tools — they can puncture cooling lines and ruin the freezer.
Do not use a hair dryer near standing water unless you can do so safely and keep electricity away from moisture.

To slow future ice buildup:

  • Check that the door seal is clean and tight.
  • Avoid leaving the freezer door open for long periods.
  • Let hot foods cool before freezing.
  • Don’t overpack the freezer so air can circulate.
