🥩 Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

For the steaks

  • 500 g ground beef (mince)
  • 1 small onion, finely grated or minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1–2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the onion gravy

  • 1 large onion, sliced thin
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

🍔 1. Form the steaks

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape into oval patties (like small steaks).

🔥 2. Cook the steaks

  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Brown patties on both sides (about 3–4 minutes per side).
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

🧅 3. Make onion gravy

  • In the same pan, melt butter.
  • Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden (8–10 minutes).
  • Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes (this removes raw flour taste).

🍲 4. Build the gravy

  • Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer until slightly thickened.

🍖 5. Finish cooking

  • Return steaks to the pan.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.

🍽️ Serve with

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Rice
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Buttered noodles

💡 Tips

  • For extra flavor, add mushrooms to the gravy.
  • Don’t skip browning the patties—it builds deep flavor.
  • If gravy is too thick, add a little more broth.

🧠 Note

Despite the fancy name, Salisbury steak is basically a seasoned beef patty served in rich onion gravy—comfort food, not a steak cut.
