Why does the vagina smell bad? 4 reasons every woman should know.

A vagina usually has a natural scent that can change throughout the menstrual cycle, after exercise, during sex, or with hormonal changes. A strong, unpleasant, or “bad” smell can sometimes be a sign that something has changed. Here are 4 common reasons every woman should know:

  1. Bacterial vaginosis (BV)
    • BV happens when the normal balance of vaginal bacteria changes.
    • It often causes a fishy odor, especially after sex, and may come with thin grayish or white discharge.
  2. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
    • Some infections, such as trichomoniasis, can cause a strong or unusual odor.
    • Other symptoms may include itching, burning, pain during urination, pelvic discomfort, or unusual discharge.
  3. Sweat, hygiene, or trapped moisture
    • The vulva (the outside area) has sweat glands, and tight clothing, prolonged moisture, or not changing underwear after sweating can contribute to odor.
    • Washing the outside only with mild soap and water is usually enough; the vagina cleans itself naturally.
  4. A forgotten tampon or foreign object
    • A tampon left in too long can cause a very strong, foul smell and may be associated with unusual discharge or discomfort.
    • If you suspect this, it’s important to remove it or seek medical help if removal is difficult.

When to see a healthcare professional:
Seek advice if the odor is new, very strong, persists for several days, or comes with itching, pain, bleeding, fever, or unusual discharge. Avoid douching or using scented vaginal products, as they can disrupt the natural balance and worsen irritation.
