Back pain? It’s over with these 4 stretches…Make it a habit!

Stretching can help many people with mild, everyday back discomfort by improving flexibility and reducing muscle tension. However, stretches are not a guaranteed cure, and the best exercises depend on the cause of the pain. Stop if a stretch increases pain, especially sharp or radiating pain.

Here are four gentle stretches often used for back comfort:

1. Knee-to-chest stretch

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent.
  • Bring one knee toward your chest and hold it gently.
  • Hold for 15–30 seconds, then switch sides.
  • Repeat a few times.

2. Cat–cow stretch

  • Start on your hands and knees.
  • Slowly round your back upward, then gently arch it downward.
  • Move slowly with your breathing.
  • Repeat 10–15 times.

3. Child’s pose

  • Kneel and sit back toward your heels.
  • Reach your arms forward and relax your back.
  • Hold for 20–60 seconds.

4. Gentle spinal twist

  • Lie on your back with knees bent.
  • Let your knees fall slowly to one side while keeping your shoulders relaxed.
  • Hold briefly, then switch sides.

Helpful habits for a healthier back

  • Stay active with regular walking or movement.
  • Strengthen core and hip muscles gradually.
  • Avoid staying in one sitting position for long periods.
  • Warm up before lifting or strenuous activity.

Seek medical advice if back pain is accompanied by leg weakness, numbness in the groin area, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain after a serious injury. Persistent or worsening pain also deserves evaluation.
