A month before a stroke, your body warns you: 10 signs not to ignore…

A month before a stroke: what does the evidence actually show?

The headline “your body warns you one month before a stroke” is misleading. There isn’t a reliable set of 10 symptoms that predict a stroke exactly one month in advance.

The closest recognized warning is a transient ischemic attack (TIA)—sometimes called a “warning stroke.” Its symptoms can be identical to those of a stroke but may disappear after minutes or hours. A TIA is a medical emergency because it can signal a substantial risk of a subsequent stroke, often within days or weeks.

Symptoms you should never ignore

Watch for sudden:

Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the face, arm, or leg.
Facial drooping or an uneven smile.
Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
Sudden confusion.
Vision changes in one or both eyes.
Loss of balance or coordination.
Sudden dizziness or trouble walking.
A severe headache with no known cause.
Sudden difficulty swallowing, particularly when accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
Symptoms that disappear after a few minutes—these still can represent a TIA and require urgent assessment.

If any of these symptoms are happening now, don’t wait for them to improve and don’t drive yourself to the hospital. Call your local emergency service immediately and note when the symptoms began. Even if the symptoms disappear, urgent evaluation is still needed.

Long-term stroke risk is also strongly influenced by factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity, so controlling these is more useful than trying to identify a supposed “one-month warning sign.”
