Headlines like “Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients” are usually overstated. There is no two-ingredient home recipe that has been proven to clear mucus from the lungs.
If you have excess mucus from a cold or mild respiratory infection, these measures may help:
- Stay well hydrated. Drinking fluids can help thin mucus, making it easier to cough up.
- Warm drinks (such as tea or warm water with honey and lemon) may soothe a sore throat and make you feel more comfortable. Honey should not be given to children under 1 year of age.
- Use steam or a humidifier if the air is dry, though evidence for steam is mixed and care should be taken to avoid burns.
- Gargle with warm salt water to help soothe throat irritation (it won’t clear mucus from the lungs).
If mucus is due to allergies, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or another medical condition, treating the underlying cause is usually more effective than relying on home remedies.
You should seek medical evaluation if you have:
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain.
- A fever that persists or worsens.
- Coughing up blood.
- Thick mucus that lasts more than 3–4 weeks.
- Wheezing, or symptoms that keep returning.
If you have a cough with mucus, tell me:
- How long you’ve had it
- The color of the mucus (clear, yellow, green, or bloody)
- Whether you have fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain
I can help you think through the possible causes and when medical care is appropriate.
