DIY Weed Killer — Step by Step

Removing weeds from your garden does not always require expensive chemicals. You can make a simple homemade weed killer using common household ingredients. It is easy to prepare, inexpensive, and useful for controlling unwanted weeds around paths, driveways, and other areas.

What You Need

1 liter of white vinegar
1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid
A clean spray bottle
A funnel, if needed
Gloves for hand protection

Step 1: Prepare the Bottle

Make sure your spray bottle is clean and empty. Use a funnel if the bottle has a small opening. This will help prevent spills while adding the ingredients.

Step 2: Add the Vinegar

Pour 1 liter of white vinegar into the spray bottle. Vinegar can dry out plant leaves, so it should only be sprayed on weeds that you want to remove.

Step 3: Add Dish Soap

Add 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid to the vinegar. The soap helps the mixture spread over the leaves instead of quickly running off.

Step 4: Mix Carefully

Close the spray bottle tightly and gently shake it. Do not shake too hard because the soap may create a lot of foam.

Step 5: Choose the Right Time

For the best results, spray weeds on a dry, sunny day when rain is not expected. Avoid spraying immediately before rain because the mixture may be washed away.

Step 6: Spray the Weeds

Spray the mixture directly onto the leaves of the unwanted weeds. Try to cover the leaves lightly without unnecessarily soaking the surrounding ground.

Step 7: Protect Other Plants

Be careful around flowers, vegetables, grass, and other plants you want to keep. This mixture is not selective, meaning it can damage desirable plants as well as weeds.

Step 8: Check the Results

Wait a day or two and check the weeds. You may notice that the leaves become dry, brown, or wilted. Some strong or established weeds may need another treatment.
