How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them White and Fresh-Smelling
Over time, pillows collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. A good wash can help refresh them and remove yellowing, but the correct method depends on the pillow filling and care label.
Step 1: Check the Pillow Label
Before washing, check whether your pillow is:
- Machine washable: Most polyester, cotton, and some down/feather pillows can be washed.
- Not machine washable: Many memory foam and latex pillows should not be soaked.
For Machine-Washable Pillows
What you need:
- Mild laundry detergent
- ½ cup baking soda (optional, for odors)
- White vinegar (optional, for freshness)
Steps:
- Remove the pillowcase and protective cover.
- Wash two pillows at a time to keep the washing machine balanced.
- Use warm water and a gentle cycle (follow the care label).
- Add detergent and, if needed, a small amount of baking soda to help neutralize smells.
- Run an extra rinse cycle to remove leftover detergent.
Drying (Very Important)
- Dry pillows completely to prevent mildew.
- Use a low-heat dryer setting if allowed.
- Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help restore fluffiness.
- Stop occasionally to shake and reshape pillows.
Removing Yellow Stains
Yellowing is often caused by:
- Sweat
- Body oils
- Moisture buildup
A pre-treatment can help:
- Apply a paste of baking soda and water to stained areas.
- Let it sit briefly.
- Wash as usual
