To keep geraniums full of flowers and thriving, watering correctly is one of the most important parts of their care. Geraniums prefer a “soak and dry” watering routine rather than frequent small amounts of water.
How to water geraniums for abundant blooms
🌿 1. Check the soil before watering
- Put your finger about 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) into the soil.
- If the top layer feels dry, it’s time to water.
- If it still feels damp, wait a little longer.
💧 2. Water deeply, not lightly
- Water slowly until excess water begins to drain from the bottom of the pot.
- This encourages roots to grow deeper and stronger.
- Avoid giving just a small splash every day, as this can create weak roots.
☀️ 3. Water according to the weather
- Hot, sunny days: Geraniums may need water every 2–3 days (sometimes more in small pots).
- Cool or rainy weather: Water less often because the soil dries more slowly.
- Indoor geraniums: Usually need less frequent watering than outdoor plants.
🚫 4. Avoid overwatering
Too much water can cause:
- Yellow leaves
- Soft, rotting stems
- Fewer flowers
- Root rot
Geraniums generally prefer being slightly dry rather than constantly wet.
🌸 5. Water at the base
- Pour water directly onto the soil around the roots.
- Try not to regularly wet the leaves and flowers, as moisture can encourage fungal problems.
🌱 6. Use well-draining soil
A good mix helps prevent water from sitting around the roots:
- Quality potting soil
- Some compost for nutrients
- Perlite or coarse sand for drainage
🌼 Extra tips for more flowers
- Remove faded flowers regularly (“deadheading”) to encourage new blooms.
- Give geraniums 6+ hours of sunlight daily.
- Feed with a flowering plant fertilizer during the growing season.
- Avoid oversized pots with too much wet soil, which can slow flowering.
A simple rule: water thoroughly when the soil is dry on top, then let the soil dry slightly before watering again. This balance usually produces healthier plants with more blooms.
