Hidden car features that almost no one knows about

Many cars have small features that owners often miss. The exact features depend on the make, model, and year, but these are some commonly overlooked ones:

1. Fuel door side indicator

Most dashboards have a small arrow next to the fuel pump icon. It points to the side of the car where the fuel door is located—useful when driving an unfamiliar vehicle.

2. Hidden key inside your key fob

Many modern key fobs contain a backup mechanical key that slides out. It can unlock the door if the battery dies.

3. Shift-lock release

If your automatic car battery is dead and the gear selector is stuck in Park, many vehicles have a small covered slot near the shifter that allows a manual release.

4. Rearview mirror dimming

Many people use the night position on older mirrors, but many newer cars have an automatic dimming mirror that reduces glare from headlights behind you.

5. Hidden storage compartments

Some vehicles have storage under:

  • The trunk floor
  • Seats
  • Cup holders
  • Cargo-area side panels

6. Window control tricks

Some cars allow:

  • Holding the unlock button to lower windows remotely
  • Holding the lock button to close windows (depending on model settings)

7. Tire pressure information

The correct tire pressure is usually printed on a sticker inside the driver’s door frame, not on the tire itself.

8. Emergency trunk release

Most vehicles have a glow-in-the-dark handle inside the trunk so someone trapped inside can open it.

9. Adjustable steering wheel and seat memory

Some cars allow drivers to save preferred:

  • Seat position
  • Mirror angles
  • Steering wheel position

10. Secret service menus and settings

Many vehicles have hidden settings accessible through the infotainment system, such as:

  • Automatic door locking
  • Lighting preferences
  • Safety alerts
  • Instrument display options
