What high creatinine means
Creatinine is a waste product produced by muscles. Healthy kidneys remove it from the blood. Elevated levels may be associated with:
- Dehydration
- Kidney disease or injury
- Certain medications
- High muscle mass or intense exercise
- Urinary tract obstruction
The important test is often not creatinine alone, but also Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) and other kidney assessments.
Fruits and kidney health
Some fruits can be part of a kidney-friendly diet, but the best choices depend on your kidney function and potassium levels.
Commonly recommended fruits for many people with kidney disease include:
- Apples
- Berries
- Grapes
- Pineapple
However, some people with advanced kidney disease need to limit high-potassium fruits such as bananas, oranges, or dried fruits.
What actually helps
- Stay adequately hydrated (unless your doctor has restricted fluids).
- Control blood pressure and blood sugar if applicable.
- Follow any kidney-specific dietary advice.
- Review medications with your healthcare provider.
- Treat underlying conditions causing the elevated creatinine.
Important caution
If someone has Chronic Kidney Disease, dietary recommendations should be individualized. A fruit that is appropriate for one person may be unsuitable for another due to potassium, phosphorus, or fluid restrictions.
If you know your creatinine level, eGFR, age, and whether you have diabetes or high blood pressure, I can help explain what the numbers may mean and discuss diet more specifically.
