How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

There isn’t one correct schedule for everyone. How often you should wash your hair depends mainly on your scalp’s oil production, hair type, hairstyle, and whether you use styling products.

A simple guide

  • Oily, fine, or straight hair: Every 1–2 days, and some people may need daily washing.
  • Normal scalp / medium-textured hair: About 2–3 times a week is a reasonable starting point.
  • Dry, curly, coily, or thick hair: Often once a week or less, depending on how the scalp feels.
  • After heavy sweating: Washing or at least rinsing the scalp may be appropriate, particularly if sweat and buildup cause itching.
  • Dandruff or an oily, flaky scalp: More frequent washing with an appropriate anti-dandruff shampoo can help; follow the product directions.

Signs you’re washing too little

An oily scalp, persistent itching, unpleasant odor, visible buildup, or worsening flakes may mean you need to wash more frequently.

Signs you’re washing too often

If your scalp becomes unusually dry or irritated, or your hair feels brittle and excessively dry, try reducing frequency and using a gentler shampoo.

One common myth: You don’t need to “train” your scalp by avoiding shampoo for long periods. Your scalp doesn’t permanently reset its oil production simply because you wash less.

For most people, start with 2–3 washes per week and adjust based on how your scalp and hair respond.
