How to Make a Super-Effective Homemade Herbicide

If you’re looking for a homemade herbicide to kill weeds in driveways, cracks, gravel paths, or other non-lawn areas, a common option is a vinegar-based spray.

Vinegar Weed Spray

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon (3.8 L) white vinegar (5% acidity)
  • 1 tablespoon dish soap

Instructions

  1. Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle or garden sprayer.
  2. Spray directly onto weed leaves on a warm, sunny, dry day.
  3. Thoroughly coat the foliage, but avoid desirable plants.
  4. Reapply if needed, especially for perennial weeds.

The vinegar damages plant tissues, while the soap helps the solution stick to the leaves.

For Tougher Weeds

Some gardeners use stronger horticultural vinegar (20% acidity), but it can cause serious skin and eye burns. If using it:

  • Wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Avoid spraying on windy days.
  • Keep children and pets away until the area is dry.

Important Limitations

  • Homemade herbicides are usually non-selective, meaning they can damage any plant they contact.
  • They work best on young annual weeds.
  • Deep-rooted perennials (such as bindweed or dandelions) often regrow because the roots survive.
  • Adding salt can increase effectiveness but may sterilize soil and harm nearby plants for a long time, so it’s generally best avoided unless you’re treating areas where you never want plants to grow.

Best Results

  • Apply during hot, sunny weather.
  • Spray when no rain is expected for 24 hours.
  • Remove large established weeds manually before treatment.

If you tell me what type of weeds you’re trying to control (lawn weeds, driveway weeds, garden-bed weeds, etc.), I can suggest the most effective approach for that situation.
