How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

Can You Really Remove Scratches From Eyeglasses?

Unfortunately, there is no reliable household “recipe” that can safely remove scratches from modern eyeglass lenses. Popular suggestions such as toothpaste, baking soda, car polish, or abrasive powders can make the lenses look temporarily different but may actually damage the lens surface or protective coatings.

What you can safely do
Rinse the lenses under lukewarm water to remove dust and grit.
Apply a small amount of mild dishwashing soap without lotion or abrasive ingredients.
Gently clean with your fingertips.
Rinse thoroughly.
Dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth.

This can remove grease and residue and restore clarity, but it won’t remove genuine scratches.

What about scratched lenses?

If the scratch is in the lens material or coating, polishing it yourself can alter the lens surface and potentially affect your vision. An optical shop can determine whether the lens can be repaired, although replacement is often the safest solution for significant scratches.

Avoid these “scratch-removal” tricks

❌ Toothpaste
❌ Baking soda
❌ Glass/window polish
❌ Abrasive cleaners
❌ Car-polishing compounds
❌ Sandpaper or buffing materials

Bottom line: You can restore the clean, shiny appearance of lenses with proper cleaning, but you generally can’t safely restore a genuinely scratched lens to “like new” condition at home. If scratches interfere with your vision, replace the lenses rather than trying to polish them away.
