Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions 🥢🔥
A classic takeout-style dish you can make at home — tender beef, crisp peppers, sweet onions, and a savory sauce.
Ingredients
For the steak:
- 1½ lbs (700 g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
For the stir-fry:
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (optional)
Sauce:
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- ½ cup beef broth or water
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (slurry)
Instructions
- Marinate the beef
- Toss sliced steak with soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil.
- Let sit for 15–30 minutes.
- Cook the steak
- Heat a large skillet or wok over high heat.
- Add oil and stir-fry beef in batches for about 1–2 minutes per side until browned.
- Remove and set aside.
- Cook the vegetables
- Add onions and peppers to the pan.
- Stir-fry for 3–5 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
- Add garlic and ginger for the last 30 seconds.
- Bring it together
- Return beef to the pan.
- Add the sauce mixture.
- Stir until the sauce thickens and coats everything.
- Serve
- Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
