Death
French television presenter and producer Thierry Ardisson died in 2025 at the age of 76 from liver cancer, according to reports from his family. His death has drawn attention to a disease that can remain unnoticed for a long time because early liver cancer often causes few or no symptoms.
What Is Liver Cancer?
Liver cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the liver grow uncontrollably. The most common type of primary liver cancer in adults is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Many cases develop in people with long-term liver damage, such as:
- Chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection
- Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
- Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic problems
- Long-term heavy alcohol-related liver injury
Possible Symptoms of Liver Cancer
1. Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing weight without trying can be an early warning sign that something is affecting the body.
2. Loss of Appetite or Feeling Full Quickly
Some people notice they eat less than usual or feel full after a small amount of food.
3. Persistent Tiredness or Weakness
Cancer and reduced liver function can contribute to ongoing fatigue.
4. Pain or Discomfort in the Upper Right Abdomen
The liver is located in the upper right side of the abdomen, and a growing tumor may cause discomfort or tenderness there.
5. Abdominal Swelling
Fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites) can cause noticeable swelling.
6. Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes (Jaundice)
Jaundice can occur when the liver cannot properly process bilirubin, causing yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes.
7. Dark Urine or Pale Stool
Changes in urine and stool color can occur with problems affecting bile processing.
8. Nausea, Vomiting, or General Feeling Unwell
Digestive symptoms may appear as liver disease progresses.
9. Easy Bruising or Bleeding
The liver helps produce proteins involved in blood clotting, so impaired function can affect bleeding and bruising.
Who Should Pay Attention?
People at higher risk should discuss liver monitoring with a healthcare professional, especially those with:
- Hepatitis B or C
- Cirrhosis
- Fatty liver disease
- A history of significant alcohol-related liver damage
- Certain inherited liver conditions
