There are newer, less invasive ways to examine the colon, but they have not replaced traditional colonoscopy.
One example is capsule endoscopy, where a person swallows a small camera capsule that travels through the digestive tract and takes images. It avoids inserting a traditional colonoscope, making it less invasive for some patients. However:
- It may not detect every abnormality as reliably as a standard colonoscopy.
- It cannot remove polyps.
- It cannot take biopsies.
- If it finds a suspicious area, a conventional colonoscopy may still be needed.
Traditional colonoscopy remains an important test because it allows doctors to detect, biopsy, and remove polyps during the same procedure, which is especially valuable for colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis.
Bottom line: Medical technology is improving, and less invasive options are developing, but colonoscopy has not become obsolete. For many people, it remains the most complete way to examine and treat problems inside the colon.
