Om du är över 60 år erbjuder det anmärkningsvärda hälsofördelar att äta en banan om dagen

The Swedish headline means: “If you are over 60, eating one banana a day offers remarkable health benefits.”

The basic idea is reasonable, but “remarkable” is marketing language. A banana can be a nutritious part of an older adult’s diet, but there is no special rule that everyone over 60 needs one banana every day.

🍌 Potential benefits

  • Potassium: Important for normal muscle and nerve function and healthy blood pressure. A generally healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables is encouraged for heart health. (NIDDK)
  • Fiber: Bananas provide dietary fiber, which can contribute to healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.
  • Convenient nutrition: They’re easy to eat and provide carbohydrates and several micronutrients without added salt.
  • Heart-friendly choice: Replacing salty or highly processed breakfast foods with fruit can fit well into a heart-healthy eating pattern. High sodium intake can contribute to fluid retention and higher blood pressure. (NIDDK)

⚠️ One important exception: kidney disease

If someone has advanced chronic kidney disease or is on dialysis, bananas may need to be limited because they are relatively high in potassium. Damaged kidneys may have difficulty removing excess potassium, and very high potassium can cause dangerous heart problems. (NIDDK)

So “one banana every day is good for everyone over 60” is too broad. For most healthy older adults, a banana can be a perfectly good food, but people with kidney disease should follow their clinician or dietitian’s potassium recommendations.

Also, eating bananas isn’t a substitute for controlling the major kidney-disease risks—particularly high blood pressure and diabetes. (NIDDK)
