Peace lily, forget about water: water it with this and it will serve you forever

Headlines like “Peace lily, forget about water: water it with this and it will serve you forever” are clickbait. No substitute can replace water for a peace lily. Like all plants, it needs water to survive.

Here are some evidence-based tips to keep a peace lily healthy:

  • Water when the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of soil feel dry. Peace lilies prefer evenly moist soil but don’t like sitting in water.
  • Use room-temperature water. If your tap water is heavily chlorinated or high in minerals, filtered or rainwater may help prevent brown leaf tips.
  • Provide bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while very low light may reduce flowering.
  • Feed sparingly. During spring and summer, use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength every 6–8 weeks. More fertilizer is not better and can damage the roots.
  • Maintain moderate humidity and keep the plant away from cold drafts or heating vents.

What about homemade “miracle” plant foods?

Claims that coffee, milk, sugary water, rice water, or other kitchen ingredients will make a peace lily “live forever” are not supported by good evidence. Some may even encourage mold, pests, or nutrient imbalances if used regularly.

With proper watering, occasional fertilizer, suitable light, and good drainage, a peace lily can live for many years and continue producing attractive foliage and flowers.
