Stop Throwing Away Eggshells! Here Are Some Smart Ways to Reuse Them
Viral posts often claim that boiling eggshells can solve many household or health problems. While eggshells do have practical uses, many of the dramatic claims are exaggerated.
1. Natural fertilizer 🌱
Boiled or crushed eggshells are rich in calcium carbonate. Add them to compost or mix them into garden soil to slowly return calcium to the soil.
2. Compost booster
Crushed eggshells decompose more quickly than whole shells and make a good addition to a compost pile.
3. Seed starters
Half eggshells can be used as small, biodegradable containers for starting seedlings.
4. Mild abrasive cleaner
Finely crushed eggshells mixed with soapy water can help scrub stubborn residue from pots and pans without harsh chemicals.
What about drinking eggshell water?
Some posts claim that boiling eggshells and drinking the water provides major health benefits. There is no strong scientific evidence that this is necessary or more beneficial than getting calcium from foods such as dairy products, fortified foods, leafy greens, or supplements if recommended by a healthcare provider.
