The claim that “eating bananas this way will stop nighttime urination” is a common online health tip, but it is not proven that bananas can stop nocturia (waking up at night to urinate).
Bananas may be relevant because they contain:
- Potassium, which helps regulate fluid balance.
- Magnesium, which supports normal muscle and nerve function.
However, waking up to urinate at night can have many causes, including:
- Drinking lots of fluids close to bedtime
- Caffeine or alcohol intake
- An overactive bladder
- Diabetes or high blood sugar
- Urinary tract problems
- Certain medications (especially water pills/diuretics)
- Sleep problems such as sleep apnea
- Prostate enlargement in some men
Some practical steps that may help:
- Reduce fluids 2–4 hours before bed (while still drinking enough during the day).
- Limit caffeine and alcohol in the evening.
- Empty your bladder before sleeping.
- Keep legs elevated for a while in the evening if you have leg swelling (fluid can shift back into circulation when lying down).
If nighttime urination happens two or more times regularly, is new or worsening, or comes with pain, burning, blood in urine, excessive thirst, or weight changes, it’s worth getting medical advice.
Bananas can be a healthy food, but they should not be relied on as a treatment for frequent nighttime urination.
