These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease

Liver disease can develop without obvious symptoms in its early stages. However, some visible changes may warrant medical evaluation, especially if they are persistent or occur alongside other symptoms.

Possible visible signs

🟡 Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
This can occur when bilirubin builds up in the body and should be evaluated promptly.

🕷️ Spider-like blood vessels on the skin
Small, branching red blood vessels (called spider angiomas) can occur with liver disease, although they can also appear in healthy people.

🤲 Redness of the palms
Persistent redness of the palms (palmar erythema) can have several causes, including liver disease.

🦵 Swelling of the legs or ankles
Fluid buildup may occur in advanced liver disease but can also result from heart, kidney, or vein problems.

🎈 Swollen abdomen (ascites)
Fluid accumulation in the abdomen can make it appear enlarged and requires medical assessment.

🟣 Easy bruising or bleeding
The liver helps produce proteins involved in blood clotting. Liver disease can contribute to bruising more easily.

Other symptoms that may occur

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Dark urine
  • Pale or clay-colored stools
  • Itchy skin
  • Pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen

When to seek medical care

Seek prompt medical attention if you develop:

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Confusion or severe drowsiness
  • Vomiting blood or passing black, tarry stools
  • Severe abdominal swelling or pain

Many of these signs can be caused by conditions other than liver disease, so they are not diagnostic on their own. If you notice persistent changes or have risk factors such as heavy alcohol use, viral hepatitis, obesity, or diabetes, it’s a good idea to discuss them with a healthcare professional. Early evaluation can help identify problems when they are more treatable
