These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

Visible Signs That May Be Linked to Liver Disease

The liver can be affected by many conditions, and some signs may appear on the skin, eyes, or body. These signs do not always mean someone has liver disease, but they can be reasons to seek medical advice—especially if they are new or persistent.

1. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • A yellow tint to the whites of the eyes or skin can occur when bilirubin builds up in the blood.
  • It can have many causes, including liver problems, bile duct issues, or blood disorders.

2. Changes in the skin

Possible signs include:

  • Increased itching
  • Dry skin
  • Easy bruising
  • Unexplained darkening or changes in skin color

3. Spider-like blood vessels (spider angiomas)

  • Small, red, branching blood vessels may appear on the skin, often on the face, neck, chest, or arms.
  • They can occur for several reasons and are not specific to liver disease.

4. Red palms (palmar erythema)

  • Some people with liver conditions develop redness in the palms, particularly near the base of the thumb and little finger.

5. Swelling in the abdomen or legs

  • Fluid buildup can cause:
    • A swollen abdomen
    • Swollen ankles or legs

6. Dark urine or pale stools

  • Changes in urine or stool color can sometimes occur when bile processing is affected.

7. Fatigue and muscle changes

  • Ongoing tiredness, weakness, or loss of muscle mass can occur with advanced liver problems
