Claims like “This will make the rats and cockroaches disappear in just one day” are almost always exaggerated. There is no home remedy that reliably eliminates both rats and cockroaches within 24 hours.
The most effective approach depends on the pest:
For cockroaches
- Keep food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills promptly.
- Empty trash regularly and reduce clutter where roaches can hide.
- Fix leaking pipes and remove standing water.
- Seal cracks and gaps around cabinets, baseboards, and pipes.
- Use commercially available cockroach baits according to the label. These are generally more effective than homemade remedies because roaches carry the bait back to their hiding places.
For rats
- Store food, pet food, and bird seed in rodent-proof containers.
- Seal entry holes around pipes, vents, doors, and foundations.
- Trim vegetation away from the house and remove outdoor debris that provides shelter.
- If needed, use appropriately designed traps and place them where children and pets cannot access them.
About homemade mixtures
Internet recipes using ingredients such as baking soda, sugar, plaster, or other household products are not consistently effective for eliminating rat or cockroach infestations. They may delay using methods that have stronger evidence of success.
