How to Clean a Very Dirty Mop and Make It Fresh Again
A dirty mop can spread grime and odors instead of cleaning your floors. Before replacing it, you can often refresh it with a deep clean using common household ingredients.
A simple deep-clean method:
You’ll need:
- Hot water
- White vinegar
- Baking soda (optional)
- Dish soap
Steps:
- Rinse the mop thoroughly
- Remove loose dirt by rinsing the mop head under running water.
- Soak it
- Fill a bucket with hot water.
- Add about 1 cup of white vinegar and a small amount of dish soap.
- Let the mop head soak for 30–60 minutes.
- Scrub or squeeze out buildup
- Work the solution through the fibers to loosen grease, dirt, and odors.
- Rinse well
- Rinse until the water runs clear.
- Dry completely
- Hang the mop in a well-ventilated area. A damp mop can develop mildew and bad smells.
For extra odor removal:
- Sprinkle a little baking soda on the mop head before soaking, then rinse thoroughly.
Important:
- Do not mix vinegar with bleach. The combination can create dangerous fumes.
- If the mop head is falling apart, permanently stained, or still smells bad after cleaning, replacing it may be the better option.
Regular care helps:
- Rinse the mop after every use.
- Avoid storing it wet.
- Wash or disinfect reusable mop heads according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
