Vinegar is the key to whiter whites and softer towels, but most use it wrong. Here’s the right way to use it.

The claim contains a grain of truth: white distilled vinegar can help with laundry, but it’s not a miracle product, and there are some common mistakes.

For Softer Towels

A common and effective method is:

  • Add ½ to 1 cup of white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle (or the fabric-softener dispenser).
  • Vinegar helps remove detergent residue and mineral buildup that can make towels feel stiff.

Don’t mix vinegar and laundry detergent in the same dispenser or at the same time, as the acid can reduce the effectiveness of some detergents.

For Whiter Whites

Vinegar can help remove some residues that dull fabrics, but it is not a bleach substitute.

  • Add about ½ to 1 cup of white distilled vinegar during the wash cycle.
  • For heavily yellowed or stained whites, oxygen bleach products are often more effective.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t use vinegar on natural stone surfaces or in ways not recommended by the appliance manufacturer.
  • Excessive vinegar use over long periods may affect some rubber components in certain washing machines.
  • Don’t expect vinegar to restore badly stained or worn fabrics to bright white.

So the “right way” is usually to use white distilled vinegar as a rinse aid, especially for towels, rather than pouring large amounts into every load or mixing it directly with detergent.
