What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Urine color can provide useful clues about hydration, diet, medications, and some health conditions, but it cannot diagnose a condition on its own.

💧 Clear

  • Often means you are very well hydrated.
  • Constantly clear urine may indicate you’re drinking more water than your body needs.

🌾 Pale yellow

  • Usually a sign of good hydration.
  • This is the typical healthy urine color for most people.

🟡 Dark yellow or amber

  • Often indicates dehydration.
  • Drinking more fluids usually returns urine to a lighter color.

🟠 Orange

Possible causes include:

  • Dehydration
  • Certain medications or vitamin supplements
  • Less commonly, liver or bile duct problems

🔴 Pink or red

Possible causes include:

  • Foods such as beets, blackberries, or rhubarb
  • Blood in the urine
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Kidney stones or other urinary tract conditions

If you notice unexplained red urine, seek medical evaluation promptly.

🟤 Brown or tea-colored

May be associated with:

  • Severe dehydration

  • Rarely, muscle injury causing muscle proteins to enter the urine

🟢 Green or blue

Can result from:

  • Food coloring
  • Rare infections or inherited conditions

  • Dehydration
