What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Blood pressure does not have one exact “normal” number for each age. The healthy range is generally based on overall health, risk factors, and medical guidelines rather than age alone. However, these are commonly used adult ranges:

Age group Typical healthy blood pressure goal*
18–39 years Around 90/60 to below 120/80 mmHg
40–59 years Around 90/60 to below 120/80 mmHg
60+ years Often targeted around below 130/80 mmHg for many adults (individual goals may differ)

*Your doctor may set a different target depending on conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, frailty, or medications.

Understanding the numbers:

  • Systolic (top number): Pressure when the heart pumps blood.
  • Diastolic (bottom number): Pressure when the heart relaxes.

General adult categories:

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120–129 and less than 80
  • High blood pressure (hypertension): Repeated readings of 130/80 mmHg or higher

A single high reading does not always mean you have high blood pressure. Stress, pain, caffeine, exercise, or incorrect measurement can temporarily raise it.

Seek medical help urgently if blood pressure is very high (for example, around 180/120 mmHg or higher) especially with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or vision changes.
