Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

The claim that daily showers after age 65 may do more harm than good comes from changes that often happen with aging skin—not because showering itself is harmful.

As people get older, skin tends to become:

  • Thinner and more fragile
  • Drier because oil (sebum) production decreases
  • Slower to repair itself
  • More prone to itching, irritation, and small cracks

Daily hot showers, especially long ones, can:

  • Strip away natural skin oils
  • Worsen dryness and itching
  • Irritate sensitive skin
  • Make eczema or other skin conditions flare in some people

For many older adults, a gentler routine may work better:

  • Shower every other day or a few times per week if daily washing isn’t needed
  • Use lukewarm water rather than hot water
  • Keep showers shorter
  • Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, mainly on areas that need it (such as underarms and groin)
  • Apply a moisturizer soon after bathing while skin is still slightly damp

However, there is no universal rule that people over 65 should stop daily showers. Some people need daily bathing because of sweating, incontinence, work, exercise, skin conditions, or personal preference. The best routine depends on skin health, activity level, and comfort.
