You cut open a watermelon and saw cracks? Stop eating it immediately! Here’s what it means!

Claims like “If you cut open a watermelon and see cracks, stop eating it immediately!” are often exaggerated. Cracks inside a watermelon do not automatically mean it is unsafe to eat. The meaning depends on the type of cracking and whether there are other signs of spoilage.

Why watermelons can have cracks inside

1. Natural growth cracks (hollow heart)

  • Some watermelons develop internal gaps or cracks due to rapid growth, uneven watering, temperature changes, or pollination issues.
  • The flesh may look split or have hollow areas.
  • If the fruit smells fresh and looks normal otherwise, it is often still safe to eat.

2. Sugar or texture changes

  • Some ripe watermelons develop internal lines or a mealy texture as they mature.
  • This affects quality more than safety.

When you should throw it away

Do not eat the watermelon if you notice:

  • A sour, fermented, or alcoholic smell
  • Slimy or mushy flesh
  • Mold growth
  • Unusual discoloration
  • Bubbling or fizzing inside
  • A damaged rind that allowed contamination inside
