Your Legs Are Screaming “Help!”: 5 Possible Signs That May Be Related to Liver Problems
The liver performs many vital functions, including processing nutrients, producing proteins, and helping remove waste products from the body. Liver disease does not usually announce itself through the legs alone, but certain leg symptoms can occur as liver disease progresses or when complications develop.
These symptoms are not specific to liver disease and can have many other causes, so they should not be used to diagnose a liver problem on their own.
1. Swelling of the Legs or Ankles
Fluid buildup (edema) can occur in people with advanced liver disease because of changes in protein production and blood flow.
Other common causes include:
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease
- Venous insufficiency
- Certain medications
2. Muscle Cramps
People with chronic liver disease may experience muscle cramps, particularly at night. However, cramps are also commonly caused by dehydration, muscle overuse, or certain medications.
3. Easy Bruising
The liver helps produce proteins involved in blood clotting. When liver function is severely impaired, bruising may occur more easily. Bruising can also result from aging, medications (such as blood thinners), or other medical conditions.
4. Itchy Skin
Persistent itching can occur in some liver and bile duct disorders due to the buildup of substances normally cleared by the liver. Itching may affect the legs or other parts of the body.
5. Muscle Weakness or Loss of Muscle Mass
Advanced liver disease can contribute to muscle wasting and weakness, making walking or climbing stairs more difficult.
