10 Often-Overlooked Metoprolol Side Effects That Deserve More Attention
Metoprolol is a commonly prescribed beta-blocker used for conditions such as high blood pressure, angina, heart failure, certain abnormal heart rhythms, and after some heart attacks. Like all medicines, it can cause side effects.
1. 😴 Unusual tiredness
Fatigue is one of the more commonly reported effects and may be particularly noticeable when starting treatment or changing the dose.
2. 🌀 Dizziness or lightheadedness
Because metoprolol slows the heart and lowers blood pressure, some people experience dizziness, particularly when standing up.
3. ❤️ An unusually slow heartbeat
Metoprolol intentionally slows heart rate, but an excessively slow rate can cause weakness, dizziness, or fainting.
4. 🥶 Cold hands and feet
Reduced peripheral circulation can cause the hands or feet to feel unusually cold.
5. 😴 Sleep disturbances or vivid dreams
Headache, insomnia, nightmares, and other sleep-related effects have been reported.
6. 🧠 Mood or cognitive changes
Depression, confusion, and short-term memory problems have been reported, although these effects don’t occur in everyone.
7. 🤢 Digestive problems
Diarrhea is a recognized adverse effect, while nausea, abdominal discomfort, constipation, and heartburn have also been reported.
8. 👄 Dry mouth
Dry mouth can occur and may be particularly annoying if you already have problems with mouth dryness.
9. 🫁 Wheezing or shortness of breath
Breathing difficulties and bronchospasm can occur. This deserves particular attention in someone with asthma or another respiratory condition.
10. 🦵 Swelling or unexplained weight gain
Swelling of the feet, ankles, or legs and unexpected weight gain can sometimes indicate worsening heart failure rather than a harmless medication effect. These symptoms warrant prompt medical attention
