🫀 “6 Vitamins to Unclog Your Arteries” — What Science Actually Says
There is no vitamin proven to unclog or remove established plaque from arteries. Atherosclerosis is a complex disease involving cholesterol, inflammation, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and other risk factors. Current cardiovascular guidelines focus on lowering cardiovascular risk rather than using vitamins to dissolve plaque.
Vitamins that support overall heart health
- Vitamin D — Important for overall health, but taking extra vitamin D has not been established as a treatment for blocked arteries.
- Vitamin C — Found naturally in fruits and vegetables and important for normal body function, but supplements haven’t been shown to clear arterial plaque.
- Vitamin E — An antioxidant, but high-dose supplementation isn’t recommended as a way to prevent cardiovascular disease.
- Folate (B9) — Important for normal metabolism, but supplements don’t reliably reverse atherosclerosis in people who aren’t deficient.
- Vitamin B12 — Necessary for healthy blood and nerves; correcting a deficiency is important, but extra B12 doesn’t “clean” arteries.
- Vitamin B6 — Essential for normal metabolism, but there is no evidence that taking extra B6 removes arterial plaque.
❤️ What actually helps protect your arteries?
The evidence supports a broader approach: don’t smoke, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, control blood pressure and diabetes, and follow a heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish, and unsaturated fats.
If cholesterol is high or atherosclerosis is already present, evidence-based cholesterol-lowering treatment can substantially reduce cardiovascular risk. Statins and other lipid-lowering medicines may be appropriate depending on individual risk.
Importantly, the American Heart Association currently states that dietary supplements are not recommended for cholesterol management
