7 medications that cause severe dementia and profound brain damage

The headline “7 medications that cause severe dementia and profound brain damage” is misleading. There are medications that can impair cognition, cause delirium, or are associated with increased dementia risk, particularly with prolonged use in older adults—but saying they “cause severe dementia and brain damage” is not medically accurate.

7 medication groups worth reviewing
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl and some nighttime cold/sleep products)
Doxylamine (some OTC sleep aids)
Oxybutynin (overactive bladder)
Amitriptyline and related tricyclic antidepressants
Paroxetine (an antidepressant with strong anticholinergic effects)
Hydroxyzine (an antihistamine)
Benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, lorazepam, clonazepam and alprazolam

Many of the first six have anticholinergic properties. The 2023 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria advises avoiding many strongly anticholinergic medicines in older adults because of risks including confusion, delirium and cognitive impairment; cumulative anticholinergic exposure is also associated with increased dementia risk.

Benzodiazepines can cause cognitive impairment and delirium, especially in older adults, and the FDA warns about dependence and potentially dangerous withdrawal.

⚠️ Don’t stop them suddenly

A medication on this list isn’t necessarily inappropriate for you. Some have important and legitimate uses. Do not suddenly discontinue a benzodiazepine or other prescribed medication without medical guidance. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can include seizures and can be life-threatening.

If you give me the names and doses of the medicines you take, I can go through them one by one and identify which ones may affect memory, confusion, falls, or long-term cognitive risk.
