1) Wooden items (spoons, cutting boards)
Hot water and steam make wood crack, warp, and lose its finish. Over time, it can also split.
2) Non-stick pans
Dishwasher detergents are harsh and can strip the non-stick coating, making pans unsafe and sticky.
3) Sharp knives
High heat and detergent dull the blades quickly, and they can also damage the dishwasher rack (or get damaged themselves by knocking around).
4) Cast iron cookware
It removes the seasoning layer and can cause fast rusting, basically ruining the pan if not re-seasoned properly.
5) Aluminum cookware
It often comes out discolored, dull, or pitted due to chemical reactions with detergent.
6) Crystal glassware
The heat and pressure can cause clouding, cracks, or permanent dullness.
7) Insulated travel mugs
Water can get trapped between layers, breaking the seal and causing loss of insulation and mold buildup.
8) Plastic containers not labeled “dishwasher safe”
Thin or low-quality plastics can warp, melt, or leach chemicals.
Simple rule of thumb
If something is wood, sharp, seasoned, delicate, or double-walled, it’s usually better washed by hand.
If you want, I can also tell you the things people think are unsafe but actually ARE dishwasher-safe—that list surprises a lot of people.
