Here’s how often you should wash your hair, according to a dermatologist.

How often you should wash your hair depends on your scalp type, hair type, lifestyle, and any scalp conditions. There is no single schedule that works for everyone.

General guidance:

🧴 Oily scalp

  • May need washing daily or every other day.
  • Excess oil can make hair look greasy and may contribute to scalp irritation.

🌿 Normal scalp

  • Often does well with washing about 2–3 times per week.

🌵 Dry or curly/coily hair

  • May need washing less often, sometimes about once a week or less, because natural oils travel more slowly along textured hair.

🏃 People who sweat a lot

  • If you exercise frequently, work outdoors, or have a sweaty scalp, washing more often may be helpful.

If you have dandruff or scalp conditions

  • A dermatologist may recommend specific anti-dandruff shampoos and a schedule based on the cause.

Helpful tips:

  • Focus shampoo on the scalp, where oil and buildup accumulate.
  • Use conditioner mainly on the mid-lengths and ends to avoid weighing down the roots.
  • Avoid very hot water and harsh scrubbing, which can irritate the scalp.
  • Adjust your routine if your scalp feels itchy, overly dry, greasy, or uncomfortable.

A simple rule: wash when your scalp feels dirty, oily, itchy, or has buildup—not just because of a fixed number of days.
