What happens to your body if you don’t drink enough water

If you don’t drink enough water, your body can become dehydrated, which affects many systems. Common effects include:

  • Thirst and dry mouth — your body signals that it needs more fluids.
  • Dark yellow urine and less frequent urination — the kidneys conserve water.
  • Tiredness and low energy — dehydration can make everyday activities feel harder.
  • Headaches and dizziness — reduced fluid levels can affect blood flow and brain function.
  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling foggy — the brain is sensitive to fluid changes.
  • Constipation — the body may pull more water from waste, making stools harder.
  • Dry skin and lips — though skin dryness can have many causes.
  • Muscle cramps or weakness — fluid and electrolyte balance can be affected.
  • Overheating — sweating and temperature regulation become less effective.

Severe dehydration can be dangerous and may cause confusion, fainting, rapid heartbeat, or very little urination. How much water a person needs varies depending on factors like climate, activity level, diet, age, and health conditions. A simple sign to monitor is usually pale yellow urine and regular urination, though it isn’t a perfect measure for everyone.
