Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them White and Fresh-Smelling

Over time, pillows collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. A good wash can help refresh them and remove yellowing, but the correct method depends on the pillow filling and care label.

Step 1: Check the Pillow Label

Before washing, check whether your pillow is:

  • Machine washable: Most polyester, cotton, and some down/feather pillows can be washed.
  • Not machine washable: Many memory foam and latex pillows should not be soaked.

For Machine-Washable Pillows

What you need:

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • ½ cup baking soda (optional, for odors)
  • White vinegar (optional, for freshness)

Steps:

  1. Remove the pillowcase and protective cover.
  2. Wash two pillows at a time to keep the washing machine balanced.
  3. Use warm water and a gentle cycle (follow the care label).
  4. Add detergent and, if needed, a small amount of baking soda to help neutralize smells.
  5. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove leftover detergent.

Drying (Very Important)

  • Dry pillows completely to prevent mildew.
  • Use a low-heat dryer setting if allowed.
  • Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help restore fluffiness.
  • Stop occasionally to shake and reshape pillows.

Removing Yellow Stains

Yellowing is often caused by:

  • Sweat
  • Body oils
  • Moisture buildup

A pre-treatment can help:

  • Apply a paste of baking soda and water to stained areas.
  • Let it sit briefly.
  • Wash as usual
