Fan as an Air Conditioner: The Simple Trick That Can Help You Feel Cooler
A fan cannot actually lower the temperature of a room, but it can make you feel cooler by increasing the evaporation of sweat from your skin. One popular low-cost trick is to use a bowl of ice or frozen water bottles in front of the fan.
The “50-Cent” Ice Bowl Trick
You’ll need:
- A household fan
- A large bowl or shallow pan
- Ice cubes or one or two frozen water bottles
How to do it:
- Place the bowl of ice or frozen bottles directly in front of the fan.
- Aim the fan so the air blows across the ice and toward you.
- As the ice melts, the moving air may feel cooler for a while.
This can provide temporary relief in a small area, although the effect is much less than a real air conditioner.
Other Ways to Stay Cool
- Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day.
- Open windows when the outdoor air is cooler, such as overnight or early morning.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoid using the oven or other heat-producing appliances during the hottest hours if possible.
- Take a cool shower or place a cool, damp cloth on your neck or wrists.
When Fans May Not Be Enough
In very hot or humid conditions, especially during a heat wave, fans alone may not prevent heat-related illness. Older adults, young children, and people with heart disease or other chronic medical conditions are at higher risk.
Seek medical attention immediately if someone develops:
- Confusion or unusual drowsiness
- Fainting
- A body temperature of 40°C (104°F) or higher
- Hot, dry skin or heavy sweating with signs of collapse
- Difficulty breathing
These can be signs of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.
