The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

That headline is somewhat sensationalized. No drink automatically “destroys” your bones, but some beverages can contribute to poorer bone health if consumed in excess or as part of an overall unhealthy diet.

Here are five types of drinks that health experts commonly recommend limiting:

  1. Sugary soft drinks – Regular sodas can displace more nutritious beverages like milk and are associated with poorer overall diet quality. Some research has found a link between frequent cola consumption and lower bone mineral density, though the reasons are likely multifactorial.
  2. Excessive alcohol – Heavy, long-term alcohol use can interfere with bone formation, reduce calcium balance, and increase the risk of fractures.
  3. Highly caffeinated drinks (in large amounts) – Very high caffeine intake may slightly increase calcium loss in urine, but for most people who get enough calcium and vitamin D, moderate coffee or tea consumption is not considered harmful to bone health.
  4. Energy drinks – These often contain large amounts of caffeine and sugar. While there is little evidence that they directly harm bones, frequent consumption may contribute to dietary patterns that are less supportive of bone health.
  5. Sugar-sweetened beverages – Drinks with high amounts of added sugar may replace healthier options and are associated with poorer overall nutrition, which can indirectly affect bone health.

To support healthy bones, focus on:

  • Getting enough calcium and vitamin D.
  • Engaging in weight-bearing and resistance exercise.
  • Avoiding smoking.
  • Limiting heavy alcohol intake.
  • Eating a balanced diet with adequate protein, fruits, and vegetables.

The headline is an exaggeration. Bone health is influenced by your overall diet and lifestyle over many years, not by occasionally drinking any one of these beverages.
