The claim that a “new method” means colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination is a bit misleading. There are newer and less invasive ways to screen for colorectal cancer, but traditional colonoscopy is still an important test because it allows doctors to directly view the colon and remove polyps during the same procedure.
Some newer or alternative approaches include:
- Stool-based tests
- FIT (fecal immunochemical test): Detects hidden blood in stool and is usually done at home.
- Stool DNA tests: Look for DNA changes and blood markers associated with colorectal cancer.
- CT colonography (“virtual colonoscopy”)
- Uses CT imaging to create pictures of the colon without inserting a traditional scope through the entire colon.
- If suspicious polyps are found, a regular colonoscopy may still be needed for removal.
- Improved imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) tools
- AI-assisted colonoscopy systems are being developed to help doctors detect small polyps more accurately.
- Future technologies
- Researchers are studying capsule-based cameras and other minimally invasive methods, but these are not yet a complete replacement for standard colonoscopy in routine care.
