Pillows can collect sweat, oils, dust, and odors over time, but many can be refreshed with a good cleaning routine. The best method depends on the pillow’s filling and care label, so check the manufacturer’s instructions first.
How to clean dirty pillows and make them fresh again
1. Check the pillow label
- Machine-washable: Many polyester and some down/feather pillows can be washed.
- Memory foam or latex: Usually should not be machine washed; they need spot cleaning.
2. Pre-treat stains
- Remove the pillowcase and protector.
- For yellowing or sweat stains, gently rub a mixture of mild detergent and water onto the stained areas.
- Let it sit for a short time before washing.
3. Wash washable pillows
- Wash two pillows at a time to keep the machine balanced.
- Use warm water (if allowed) and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Run an extra rinse cycle to remove leftover soap.
4. Dry completely
- Drying thoroughly is important to prevent mildew.
- Use a low-heat setting if the label allows.
- Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff pillows.
- Make sure the inside is completely dry before using them again.
5. Freshen between washes
- Air pillows in sunlight for a few hours when possible.
- Use a pillow protector to reduce buildup.
- Wash pillowcases weekly and pillow protectors regularly.
