The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat — and How to Reduce It

Constant mucus or phlegm in the throat is a common complaint. It can feel like something is stuck, cause frequent throat clearing, coughing, or a “lump in the throat” sensation. The cause is not always an infection—many everyday conditions can trigger excess mucus or make normal mucus feel more noticeable.

Common Causes of Persistent Throat Mucus

1. Postnasal drip (mucus draining from the nose)

One of the most common causes is mucus moving from the nose and sinuses down the back of the throat.

Possible triggers:

  • Allergies
  • Sinus irritation
  • Colds
  • Exposure to dust, smoke, or pollution

Signs it may be postnasal drip:

  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Feeling mucus dripping in the throat
  • Stuffy or runny nose

2. Acid reflux (GERD or LPR)

Stomach acid or stomach contents can irritate the throat, even without obvious heartburn.

Possible symptoms:

  • Constant throat clearing
  • Hoarseness
  • A chronic cough
  • A “something stuck” feeling
  • Excess mucus sensation, especially after meals or when lying down

3. Allergies

Allergic reactions can cause the body to produce more mucus.

Common triggers:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Mold

4. Smoking and airway irritation

Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke irritate the airways and can increase mucus production.

Other irritants include:

  • Air pollution
  • Chemical fumes
  • Strong fragrances

5. Dehydration

When the body lacks fluids, mucus can become thicker and harder to clear.

Helpful steps:

  • Drink enough water throughout the day
  • Limit excessive alcohol intake
  • Avoid too much caffeine if it worsens dryness

6. Asthma or chronic airway conditions

Some people with asthma or other lung conditions experience:

  • Persistent cough
  • Chest tightness
  • Increased mucus
