Bleach stains are different from most other stains because bleach removes the fabric’s dye. Once the color has been stripped away, it usually can’t be washed out.
Here are two approaches that may help minimize the appearance of bleach damage:
1. Stop the bleaching action
If the bleach spill just happened:
- Rinse the area thoroughly with cool water.
- Wash the garment according to its care label.
This won’t restore the lost color, but it can prevent any remaining bleach from causing more damage.
2. Restore or disguise the color
If the stain is permanent, you can:
- Use a fabric marker or fabric dye that closely matches the original color.
- Dye the entire garment a darker color if the fabric is suitable.
- Cover the spot with embroidery, a patch, or another decorative repair.
What won’t work
Many viral “hacks” claim that vinegar, baking soda, toothpaste, or other household products can remove bleach stains. Unfortunately, they cannot replace the dye that bleach has destroyed.
